California State Railroad Museum
The California State Railroad Museum is a true Sacramento gem, a historic and entertaining attraction that will teach your group all there is to know about railroading history in the area and across America. Within this museum, you can explore railroad history via locomotives, exhibits, and rides. The museum itself is a 2-story building located in Old Sacramento, a spot within the State Park system.
Inside you will learn all about the ‘iron horse’ connecting California to the rest of the nation through easy transport, plus you will see astounding examples of locomotives from the past throughout. A great example of a site to see while here is the 150-year-old 40-ton ‘monument to innovation’, the oldest train onsite. There are 19 trains total in the collection, the time frame of their origin ranging from 1862 to 1944. See everything from developing steam technology of the Southern Pacific No. 1, all the way to the technologically advanced (for its time) Southern Pacific No. 4294.
Some great exhibits to see while here include Ride the Rails, Fast Tracks: World of High-Speed Rail, and the hands-on STEM Learning experience.
